Check 21 Information
The "Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act" (Check 21), signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 28, 2003, took effect on October 28, 2004. The purpose of this legislation is to reduce or eliminate the physical transport of checks by requiring banks to accept substitute checks or IRDs (image replacement documents) created from an image of the original check.
